Just found this A319 operate by Australia Government - Department of the Environment and Water Resources. It transports the deported Sri Lankan assylum seekers from XCH to CMB. http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politi...418-2i31q.html. This aircraft visited CMB also on 18/19 Apr 2013.

          • A319s with belly tank can do longer range .. the longest I know flown was HAM-SIN, non-stop, and the DC Aviation - SIN-MUC

Anyway deportees may not have much luggage with them, right ??

              • even A318 does JFK - LCY. I think CMB - XCH can be accomplished with an A319 without tech stops.

                • the 318-JFK-LCY, if I remember, had to do a tech stop on the way out, only on return it comes in non-stop !!! Not sure .. \

Correct, LCY - JFK flight having a technical stop in SNN when the return flight from JFK - LCY operating as nonstop. Please note it's an A318 with only 32 seater Business class. If I recall it correctly BA openskies started the LCY-JFK-LCY services using A318 after concorde grounded indefinately. On an A318, LCY to JFK flight takes 9:15hrs and JFK to LCY takes 7:15hrs. You rather take normal BA F/J class flight from LHR to JFK in 7:30hrs and JFK to LHR in 6:40hrs. Probably there must be a valid reason for operating this all J A318 service between LCY and JFK. But mostly Business Passenger doesn't like spending more hours in flying and in the 45 minutes technical stop.

                        • Some really nice shots here of the BA birds at CMB. Great to see this airline back in Sri Lanka after a long hiatus. This is a good sign for SL hopefully more carriers will follow in BA's footsteps. Wonder why they don't fly from Heathrow though instead of Gatwick?

                            • Looks like this is a weekly affair....and see it made it to Darwin from CMB this time in return leg.

A319's has the longest range in A320 family and usually does 5-6 hrs trips with pax.
                              For example:

I have seen 737's doing 9+ hrs on delivery flights from Boeing plant to places in Europe (of course empty birds like in this case)
