Because SA send two daily flights to LHR from JNB as both SA flights land at LHR in the early morning 06:25/06:55 then they take off from LHR to JNB around 19:00/21:00 when aircraft spends around 13 hours in ground at LHR . It's a matter of red-eye flight. Wiki mentions, From a marketing standpoint, the red-eye flights allow business travelers an opportunity to migrate eastward without having an impact on a full business day.

It then proceeds to sit at its gate until 17:55 when it departs back to JNB via DKR. I would think that South African must spend quite a bit on gate fees, as their aircraft sit idle at these airports throughout entire days. It's good for us spotters, as the South African A340s are the plane that you are gaurenteed to get a shot of if you visit IAD during daylight hours!

Thanks Azamh for sharing the amazing pictures from HKG!
It looks like a massive expansion work going on at present for HKG's third runway and additional terminals! I am curious to know more about it.

Hi ecureilx, Any Updates about expansion of SIN ?

SIN? Well, while work on T4 has started, realising the limitation of two runways, there are plans to merge Runway 3, currently an AF Runway, is being mooted as the third runway .. and that it has more than enough spatial seperation is a selling point
From Wiki
02L/20R 4,000 13,123 Asphalt
02C/20C 4,000 13,123 Asphalt (original 02R/20L)
02R/20L 2,750 9,022 Asphalt -> Current Changi Air Base East
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changi_Air_Base_%28East%29 and same link says "In the future, the runway will be extended for the expansion of Singapore Changi Airport"
You never know when the Air Base will become part of SIN and a new runway will be coming up some where, in reclaimed Land
Trivia: for those who don't know, Since Independence, Singapore has grown by 10% by reclamation .. and the land where Changi is, where Marina Bay Sands / Garden by the bay, Cruise Center etc. etc. is, Jurong Island is, and Tuas South is, all are reclaimed, and didn't exist pre-1960s
