. It's a matter of red-eye flight. Wiki mentions, From a marketing standpoint, the red-eye flights allow business travelers an opportunity to migrate eastward without having an impact on a full business day.

Because SA send two daily flights to LHR from JNB as both SA flights land at LHR in the early morning 06:25/06:55 then they take off from LHR to JNB around 19:00/21:00 when aircraft spends around 13 hours in ground at LHR. It then proceeds to sit at its gate until 17:55 when it departs back to JNB via DKR. I would think that South African must spend quite a bit on gate fees, as their aircraft sit idle at these airports throughout entire days. It's good for us spotters, as the South African A340s are the plane that you are gaurenteed to get a shot of if you visit IAD during daylight hours!
