      • Even two days before, it was cancelled due to technical reason i suppose. The current status is temporary or they have to replace with another aircraft?

        • RJ has reduced the CMB flights from three to two weekly between 22-May-3 Jul 2013, onboard A320 instead of usual A332/A342. I think RJ's A320 which fly on Amman-Colombo will have Technical Stop in Al Ain. Anybody know why RJ cut down the flights of CMB ?

MJ can't manage with two A321s as 4R-MRE on AOG. They definately need additional aircraft to manage their flights that operates for 3x DXB, 4x SHJ, 6x BAH, 4x IXM, 5x DAC, 7x CGK on top of that MJ launched second Indonesian destination, Medan (twise a week) on 22-May-2013. I think MJ will be using UL fleet to keep up the schedule running.

Spoke to Aircraft Technician about 4R-MRE , he said repair has been completed last night so it will be back in service anytime.

Not sure... seems as though they must have had good load factors up until now. A year or two ago they switched the aircraft on the route from an Airbus A310 to the A330s and A340s... not sure why they are suddenly cutting down. I would think that Royal Jordanian might have load factor on European tourists connecting to Sri Lanka among others, but I guess it's not as popular as it used to be. Too bad, RJ made nice eye candy on early morning flights out of BIA.

Not sure why they got MRE! There were much newer A321s on the market. Maybe they leased it fairly cheap? Is Mihin ordering new aircraft as was speculated before?

Also heres an interesting article on the almost finalised UL Airbus deal:

In that context a deal with European aircraft maker Airbus has been finalised to procure 10 new airplanes. In a deal worth US$ 1.3 billion, SriLankan is to buy six A330-300s for medium haul flights and four A350-900s for long-haul flights. The arrangement with Airbus will ensure SriLankan Airlines remain as a single-aircraft-brand carrier with the selection of aircraft also based on a better payload. Separately a further three A350s will be sourced from the leasing market as supplies-slots from Airbus weren’t available. The A330-300s (capable of carrying 300 passengers), will begin replacing the 18 year old fuel guzzling A340-300s between October 2014 and December 2015 whilst the 340-seater A350-900s are expected to join the SriLankan fleet between 2019 and 2023. The leased three A350-900s will come in between 2017 and 2019. Despite the staggering amount, Chandrasena said modernisation was critical for the future plans of the national carrier, as investment in product upgrading was long due.
Thanks lordvader for the latest update on UL's new Airbus deal! The article you posted says UL is going to use the A330-300s for medium haul flights. Does this mean those A330-300s are joining the UL fleet wouldn't have the range to do long-haul ?

                  • Hey guys
Just wanted to knw weather the A340's flown by Sri Lankan airlines is a success? Looking from an economic point of view.. I knw its passenger capacity is more compared with the A330... But i have noticed that many people say that the fuel side of the plane isnt that great.. Just wanted to knw ur opinions abt this...
                    Thanks...

I've heard similar complaints to that effect about the effectiveness of the A340 when it comes to efficiency economically. In a recent article I read about the loss which UL is currently suffering from, the author highlighted the fact that the Airbus A340 has not been helpful when it comes to profit on long routes. It cited that the introduction of the Airbus A330-300, which is far more fuel-efficient, might help Sri Lankan Airlines do better moneywise. I hope that is correct! While I do like the A340 as an aircraft, I think it is not good at all on fuel efficiency, and in today's economy airlines cannot afford that.

Yea.. And especially low fuel efficiency that Sri Lankan airline's can't afford, with Sri Lankan airlines making huge losses ..
Anyways it's really great to see the A340's being replaced... But why didn't Sri Lankan airlines consider B787's? Isn't that a great efficient plane?

Not sure Banu, I'd think they would be getting the new A333HGWs with extra range (so it should be able to do long haul). Although someone from UL would have to confirm the version that they will get.

The CEO was quoted as saying that Boeing didnt offer them an interim aircraft to replace the A343s whereas Airbus offered A333s to replace the A343s.

                              • This is a question that has throbbed in my mind :
If Sri Lankan airlines are sensitive about fuel cost's and fuel efficiency why haven't they suited the existing A320's with fuel saving shark-lets?
Or is the A320's currently operating moderately fuel efficient?
