  • Looks like UL is paying a fair price for the Airbus-es!

"Loss making national carrier SriLankan has signed a 1.3 billion U.S. dollar deal with Airbus to purchase ten aircraft"

While Xinhua may not be the most reliable new site and this price may not include the Engine package, USD 130M average price seems reasonable.

    • Bulls**!!! The order which was placed with Airbus is already cancelled. UL is looking forward for a strategic partner at the moment!!! So pathetic
Lasantha, Are you sure you got the correct information? Is it true SriLankan's Airbus order cancelled?

BIA would be an ideal location, as more reputable foreign airlines are beginning or resuming service to Colombo. Along with the plans for a 2nd runway in Colombo, I think this Lufthansa project would be far better suited Colombo. More airlines are using narrow bodied aircraft to CMB, such as Thai and Royal Jordanian switching to A320s on their CMB routes. I hope UL uses better judgement with this project.
If someone is flying in for maintenance does it really matter (after all it's only a few hundred miles away) ? KIA is overcrowded as it is (at least that is the excuse being given for expansion i.e. another runway). If it helps where there is less time spent on land acquisition by moving away unnecessary structures from KIA that would be better.

The more urgent need has always been a second runway in KIA which never seems to get addressed.

If the Airforce base was shifted to HIA then there is enough space on that end for a parallel runway...

          • Sri Lanka national carrier to begin services to Seychelles and Nairobi

Thu, Aug 8, 2013, 10:57 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka's national carrier SriLankan Airlines will launch direct services to Seychelles in October 2013, according to an announcement made by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Transport of Seychelles.

The airline will operate three return flights per week from Colombo to Mahe, the largest island of Seychelles and subject to regulatory approvals by the Kenyan authorities, will offer a through service to Nairobi.

During Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's visit to Seychelles in June, the two countries signed an agreement to establish direct air links as a way to catalyze the trade and tourism between the two island nations.

The announcement was made following a meeting held in Seychelles between the officials of the two governments and representatives from the airlines of the two countries.

"Seychelles have agreed to a wide-ranging commercial agreement that will give customers of SriLankan Airline convenient access to Air Seychelles' regional network in the Indian Ocean and South Africa, including additional services from Colombo to Seychelles via Abu Dhabi. Customers of Air Seychelles will in turn enjoy access to new points in Sri Lanka, China, Japan, and Southern India, as well as Nairobi," the announcement said. Good move! But I can not find the flight schedule yet in Amadeus. UL can use A320 for this route do you think??

I hate to sound pessimistic, but I am not sure how successful this route would be. SEZ is already aptly served by both EK and EY. While Sri Lankans do not need visas to enter Seychelles, it is a very expensive destination and I doubt there will be a lot of O&D traffic on this route.

SEZ is well within the range of A320. Not sure if the ETOPS 180 would be enough though.

                    • SEZ seems to be interesting move. Both EY and QR operates A320/319s to SEZ and distance seems to be more than from CMB with almost same (or more) over water. Looks like ETOPS 180 would work. Hopefully this is not a politically motivated move.

Seychelles Int'l, Mahe Island (FSIAFSIA) flight tracking (arrivals, departures, en route, and scheduled flights) and airport status.

Hmmm...I am quite positive on this route...there is a good demand for cargo...if this route is a successful route then UL should look at Mauritius as well

Finances allocated for this project is now being used to pay the outstanding invoices at CPC. Since the airline is running at a huge loss and the govt. too not in a position to finance the company, UL is now looking for a strategic partner!!! Check wz Airbus in regards to the MOU

SriLankan to break even over four years with new fleet. SriLankan airlines group is planning to break even in the year to March 2017, after running about 335 million US dollars of losses in the intervening years. The first of six A330-600s will arrive in October 2014 giving 6-8 percent in fuel savings. From 2017, the first of A350-900s will arrive giving fuel savings of 12 to 15 percent, he said.
