  • Turkey to fly direct from December

Turkish Airlines will be launching direct flights to Colombo from December, CEO of Turkish Airlines,Temel Kotil said. He said that Colombo is an important destination for the airline and it has lived upto revenue expectations as well. “This is the reason why we decided to convert our current national frequency to a daily,” he said. Kotil also said that the airline is also keen to upgrade all their destinations to daily flights. These Colombo flights will also have a stop over in Male. He said that they do not have immediate plans for the Mattala Airport.

i think it would be economical 4 BA if they used the 787 on the CMB route.........there is'nt a high load factor and the 787 is way more fuel efficient compared to the 777-200ER

I think this is old news if I'm not mistaken. Turkish Airlines launched direct flights to Colombo on the 31-Jan-2013. By the way, TK will increase Colombo flights from 4 weekly to Daily service effective Winter 2013

I think what THY CEO meant was IST nonstop to CMB or daily flight operation to CMB

If it old new he does not need to mention the status of the current revenue status from Colombo. But again dailynews is very good in mixing up things

A direct flight and nonstop flight are two different things. Wiki : A direct flight in the aviation industry is any flight between two points by an airline with no change in flight numbers, which may include a stop over at an intermediate point.[1] The stop over may either be to get new passengers (or allow some to disembark) or a mere technical stop over (i.e. for refuelling purposes only). These are often confused with non-stop flights, which are flights involving no intermediate stops.

This is excellent news! Great to see a world-class airline such as Turkish increasing their presence at CMB. As a Sri Lankan living in the United States, this will be a fantastic connection. After a night flight from Washington Dulles to the modern Istanbul Ataturk airport, it would be a short layover before boarding the flight onward to CMB. Turkish also has the best deals out of any international carrier operating between the US and Asia, having rates hundreds of dollars cheaper than Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways from Washington to Colombo. Looking forward to possibly flying on this route in the future.

Wow! I hope that this is true. Having regular DreamLiner service to Sri Lanka would be great. I had heard rumors about a year or so back that Emirates had planned to operate a route to CMB using an A380, but I am guessing it was just people talking.

                          • Mihin to acquire new Boeings in 2015

                            Shirajiv Sirimane

Mihin Lanka will acquire two new Boeing aircrafts in the first quarter of 2015. The two new aircrafts will have around 157 seats each and is expected to replace two of the current A321 aircraft. “The lease agreement of the current fleet of three ends in early 2015 and we are looking forward in replacing them by acquiring modern Boeings,” an official from Mihin Lanka said.

He said that although there will be an additional cost for upgrading the ‘Boeings’, they can be able to cover this cost. “The new Boeings will give a better fuel consumption and its operation costs too will be low,” he added.

In addition to the two Boeings Mihin Lanka also operates a A320 aircraft. The current three aircraft were also fitted with ETOP allowing them additional safety and fuel saving while flying over the sea. With ETOP an aircraft can fly 90 minutes with one engine.

The budget airline will introduce a new kids meal on board is also looking at flying to two new destinations, Singapore and Seychelles.

The airline during its initial stages operated to both Singapore and Bangkok and the airline is currently studying to reintroduce three weekly (evening) flights to Singapore.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa along with a business delegation visited Seychelles and numerous requests have been made to operate flights to this destination, the budget airline is expected to take off to Seychelles early next year. Katmandu was also in the radar of Mihin Lanka. However the feed back had not been too encouraging and the airline is having second thoughts on it.

In addition to daily flights to Jakarta Mihin has also launched a twice daily flight to Medan. “This is a seasonal flight targeting the Ramadan season and it will conclude in October.”

The Mihin Lanka has also commenced new air services with the start of Buddhist pilgrim season in India. This season prevails from August to November.

Mihin Lanka officials informs that from August 3, to date, more than 2,000 pilgrims have travelled to India by Mihin Lanka. The airline operates services to Baranes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Buddha Gaya on Saturdays. The services to New Delhi are being operated on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Mondays.

The airline also informed that facilities are being provided to government servants, pensioners and security services personnel to pay their ticket fare in ten installments. This is the only air service that provides this kind of concessions.

Arrangements have also been made to operate air services to Indian pilgrim destinations from the Mattala Rajapakse International Airport starting from next month. The airline’s current route include Bahrain, Delhi, Dhaka, Dubai, Kuwait, Gaya, Jakarta, Madurai, Medan, Sharjah and Varanasi.
