SriLankan doesn't own any aircraft and they sold and leased back ADA, ADB, ADC from Veling Aircraft Leasing in year 2000. I think 4R-ADA still in Colombo for maintanance checks before return to the lessor.

UL has reduced frequencies and downgraded capacity and can't make money on European routes. They have also lost cargo contracts including at least one that was profitable.

There is something very wrong with the UL business model if they can't make money with full aircraft.
There is...that is call political intervention within the airline. It is quite serious. Rajapakse thinks this airline his private fiefdom. Otherwise there is no reason to sponsor (under the banner of commonwealth games) a trip st kitts and navis, night races in Colombo, brother in law as the Chairman, additional stoppage @HRI, code sharing with a LCC to name few.

in London, UK apparently there are 13 Managers.

Not forgetting the Earth Summit 2012 in Rio.

A340 flew Colombo-Lisbon-Havana-Rio de Janeiro-Johannesburg-Colombo with 200 passengers. They were gone for almost 2 weeks. Crews had to be flown to Lisbon and Johannesburg. Never did hear who had to pay for all of this. It made the papers at the time it happened. This is the worst abuse that I'm aware of.

This sort of thing would never have happened under Peter Hill.

I can't imagine anyone lending UL $175 Million.

Saddens me deeply to see a complete lack of accountability.

True, but SriLankan is making good decisions on the route network recently. e.g. SriLankan plans nonstop flights to Beijing and Shanghai from Summer 2014 as below. Also it's reported to be UL metal to fly Melbourne from January 2015. UL is getting three x A321s for regional expansion as three ageing A340s leaving the UL fleet before August 2014. Looks like they are going to expand regional network.

                • According to Mihin's schedule page, they are increasing one more frequency to IXM from summer. The increased frequency will be operated on Thursday and booking for the same is already opened.

But as i said before, booking for Fridays and Sundays remain closed. Dont know their exact plan.

                  • Can someone please enlighten me as to the naming of the UL fleet? I was at CMB last month and was surprised to see that one of the 320s, 4R-ABP was named "City of Gokunna". I know that one of the 340s is named "City of Magam Ruhunupura" but I assumed that was just a once off. I didn't know that SriLankan had revived this concept of naming aircraft, which I think was last active when Air Lanka had the TriStars.
Any idea what the current aircraft names are?
                    Thanks.

Hi Banu, UL online timetable showing both. Do you think eventually they will remove 818 (via HRI/BKK) from the system. I have a booking for 818 in middle of Aug.

UL will load all the S14 schedules in Airline inventory system by 2nd week of February. I don't think they will continue operating BKK/PEK and BKK/PVG along with PEK and PVG nonstop flights due to shortage of Widebodies. Notsure if they will do HRI/PEK also though. We can expect Daily UL A320s operating to BKK.

Sri Lanka awarded “Best Travel Destination” for Chinese

Sri Lanka was awarded with the “Best Travel Destination” Award at the Annual Travel Award Ceremony of the Travel and Leisure Magazine of China held in Beijing.

Awards were given for Best Travel Destination, Best Hospitality Provider, Best Airlines and Best Travel Organizer.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to China Ranjith Uyangoda received the award at the awarding ceremony, which was attended by more than 400 representatives including diplomats, travel executives and travel media personnel.

The Travel and Leisure Magazine identified Sri Lanka as the Best Travel Destination through an opinion poll conducted among its journalists and readers in China.

At the awarding ceremony, a holiday package jointly sponsored by the Sri Lankan Airlines and Jetwing Travels of Sri Lanka was awarded to a lucky winner.

Thanks Banu; I will keep watching. Hopefully they will not screw our plans.
