      I thought exactly the same as it will make losses even worse.

      Actually MR government is the one who ordered 2 x B737 for MJ and 4 x A321neo for UL. But Ranil government later changed the 2 x B737 order to 2 x A320neo with ALC. It looks like UL will take those 2 x A320neos + 4 x A321neos.

      Can't they be able to get the fairly new A320ceo on lower / better lease rates? Cronies filling their pocket without thinking about future of the national carrier. All these cronies are needs to be jailed.

        That has been the case for the last 30+ years. Not only passenger aircraft but also military equipment. Like the Kfirs and MiG 27s before, the new call for multi-role fighters is a stream of pocket money earning.

          What would have been more atrocious is, if something like the CSeries popped up. A big boss in the airline was taking a certain liking to the CSeries earlier.

            That's a question of the people negotiating these leases knowing what they are doing. I don't believe that to be the case here.

            I've explained how things (don't) work at the UL office and there have been several articles in the papers about the lease rates on the A333's and A350's before they cancelled the order.

            My guess is that they've leased the entire fleet at too high rates.

            Example - A32X @ $100,000/month too much A332 @ $200,000/month too much and A333 @ $400,000 too much - this would represent a large portion of UL's monthly losses.

            Nobody seems to be in a rush to investigate - so we may never know what the truth is behind these leases. There are certainly signed contracts with the names of those involved on them.

              It's been informed Kuwait Airways is going to change the Colombo flight operation from October 2016.

              Any idea which aircraft they currently use for Colombo route? I remember the days i used to fly on their A300/A310..

                    Kuwait Airways (KU, Kuwait) is to retire its fleet of five A300-600s and three A310-300s at the end of the year the airline's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rasha Al Roumi has revealed. The types are currently used on flights throughout the Gulf, the Middle East, Europe, North Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. Al Roumi told a press conference last week that the removal of older jets would coincide with the arrival of new aircraft the most recent of which was an A330-200 - the first of five on lease from Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac). Next year, the Kuwaiti national carrier will phase out its four older A320-200s while its A340-300s and B777-200(ER)s will be gradually replaced with a fleet of ten B777-300(ER)s which will begin arriving from November 2016 onwards. As such, according to Al Roumi, the retirement of the carrier's older widebodies should be completed by June 2017. Kuwait Airways has firm orders for fifteen A320neo and ten A350-900s, deliveries of which will commence in 2019 and 2021 respectively. It also has options for five more A320neo and five more A350s, possibly for the larger A350-1000. In the longterm, the CEO alluded to Kuwait Airways' interest in Boeing's B777X offering which could replace its B777-300(ER)s from 2026 onwards.

                        The Treasury is bound by duty to return Rs. 500 million of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) that was invested in Sri Lankan Airlines, said Labour Minister John Seneviratne in Parliament yesterday.

                        He made these observations yesterday in response to a question raised by JVP Kalutara District MP Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, who inquired on what ground the EPF monies had been invested in a loss making institution.

                        Minister Seneviratne said the intention was that the investment would boost the profit of the airlines.

                        Dr. Jayatissa said everybody knew that the SriLankan Airlines was a loss-making enterprise. Investing EPF money in such a venture amounted to depriving funds of the EPF. He said SriLankan Airlines was not an enterprise that is listed in the Stock Market and questioned as to how the investment was made during the previous government.

                        The minister said the investment was made on the approval of the Treasury. The Treasury should take the responsibility of returning the money to the EPF.

                            SriLankan Airlines is cancelling six flights and rescheduling 10 others to alternate times of the day from January 6 to April 6, 2017 owning to the closure of the Katunayake airport between 8.30 am to 4.30 pm for urgent maintenance work on its runway.
                            A media release issued by the carrier stated on Friday that cancellations would include: UL308 Colombo-Singapore and UL 309 Singapore-Colombo; UL127 Colombo-Chennai and UL122 Chennai-Colombo; UL133 Colombo-Trichy and UL132 Trichy-Colombo; UL115 Colombo-Male and UL102 Male-Colombo; UL167 Colombo-Cochin and UL166 Cochin-Colombo; and UL173 Colombo-Bangalore and UL174 Bangalore-Colombo.
