Why has it got to refuel at CMB. The A330-300 has enough range to cover the two airports, unless the aircraft is a A330-300 regional jet.

Medina is a "hot and high" airport. This combination may reduce the maximum take-off weight to the point that the flight cannot be done non stop.
Maximum take-off weight depends on meeting single - engine climb gradients. At an airport like Medina you may also start to run into brake energy or tire speed limits.
I operate out of an airport where it was 44C at time of departure over the Summer. This reduced our maximum allowable take-off weight by just over 20,000kg. Sri Lanka to pay $170 million to AerCap for A350 cancellation - Finance Minister
Sri Lanka will pay $170 million to AerCap Holdings NV (AER.N), the world's largest independent aircraft leasing company, for cancelling four A350s ordered by the previous government, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said on Tuesday.
The move comes as the government is in the process of finalizing a partner to revive the national carrier. It canceled four of eight A350 aircraft orders with Airbus Group SE (AIR.PA).
"The cost will be $170 million for the cancellation and it will be paid for AerCap," the finance minister told Reuters.
Government officials have said the remaining four A350s are scheduled to be delivered towards 2020 but the government is yet to take a decision on them.

I am not sure how accurate the report is because an earlier news article quoted Minister Kabir Hasim that the government had negotiated and reduced the penalty from 170 million US $ to 98 million US $ (sorry cannot trace that link ATM).Originally posted by ejanson65 View Post

Fitsair's IL18 (4R-EXD) left Sri Lanka and delivered to LED via PKV on the 3rd Oct 2016 for storage. Now Fitsair is down with only one aircraft in Colombo which is their MD80F. Any updates about they are taking delivery of second MD80F any sooner. As per news, SriLankan Cargo is doing good but not sure why they are not expanding.Comment

If these guys actually have a plan then the aircraft could be used profitably otherwise it could be bad news again. Earlier it was reported that SL paid a USD 17M penalty to cancel the first A359. So paying USD 153M for the subsequent three (USD 51M a piece) seems hugely excessive.
Since Reuters are quoting none other than the Finance Minister (who I assume is good with numbers) the only plausible explanation is that this is a gross exaggeration to throw unfathomable figures at the general public.

SriLankan Airlines is going to expand the narrowbody fleet by adding 6 x A320neos from year 2017 - according to below news.
By the end of 2017, SriLankan will have 14 A320s and 10 A330s.

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's state-run SriLankan Airlines will take delivery of six Airbus A320NEO aircraft over 2017 and 2018 expanding it narrow body aircraft fleet and regional routes, Chief Executive Suren Ratwatte said.
Four of the planes have been leased from Air Lease Corporation and two from AerCap, he said.
The first of the aircraft will arrive in the first quarter of 2017. Five will be delivered during the year and the sixth aircraft will come in 2018, Ratwatte said.
The aircraft will be deployed on regional routes which are profitable for the airline.
Ratwatte said he could deploy more A320s if he had them.
SriLankan Airlines was making money is sectors like India which was a fast growing market.
SriLankan is also opening new route to Gan Island, in the Maldives this winter and expanding frequencies to Seychelles, Ratwatte said.
SriLankan Airlines will also take over regional routes operated by Mihin Lanka, a state-run budget carrier which will stop flying in November.
SriLankan now has a fleet of 10 wide bodied Airbus A330s and 10 A320 aircraft.
By the end of 2017 it will have 14 A320s and 10 A330 operating.
