  • Official spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne faced a barrage of questions on the two airlines at the weekly news conference on Wednesday. Here are excerpts:
Q: Mihin Lanka is to be liquidated. Its debt amounts to more than Rs 4,868 million. It owes the People’s Bank Rs 1,100 million. The loans for SriLankan is Rs 1,500 million. What will happen to this debt?
A: These are loans from State banks and need to be paid. Only yesterday it was revealed that among the first Board of Directors have been Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Roshan Gunatilleke and Sajin Vass Gunawardena. Aircraft have been purchased without any tender procedures. Our government has been forced to take the burden of this debt.
Q: Are you looking into the reasons for the losses. It was mentioned that a Commission was being appointed
A: Without any feasibility report, the company was launched on a political decision. They appointed political henchmen. Going by the Board of Directors you can see this. They are not even those who tightened a nut in the aircraft. How can they make profits?
Q: Have you decided to appoint a Commission?
A: That was also discussed yesterday (Tuesday), about the appointment of a Commission.
Q: Will the licence be given to another agency.
A: That will remain open. After discussions in Qatar (during the President’s recent visit), a representative from there came here on Saturday itself. The discussions were concluded on Sunday and he returned on Monday saying he would return in two weeks’ time”.

There were also other significant issues that came up for discussion at last Tuesday’s weekly ministerial meeting.

Based on the comments above, maybe Qatar is looking to purchase Mihin's old AOC licence rather than help UL. Would make much more sense IMHO and they could even use it to deploy the A320s that were due to go to Al Maha.

Perhaps Qatar is fully aware of how 'Business' is done in Sri Lanka and will do the smart thing and stay well clear.
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

Why 30 weekly fro Chennai and 26 weekly for Male and 21 weekly for Bangkok and Singapore?
Why can't it be reduced to 2 daily flights using A350s?(if SL had some)

The cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne recently revealed that the Mihin Lanka Airlines flight will be handed over to the Qatar airline. Attending the cabinet decision making media briefing. Minister Abeywardena said that Mihin Lanka Airlines license was already open and that discussions were held with the airline in Qatar on the President's visit. Meanwhile, Senaratne said that the Cabinet decided to appoint Mihin Lanka to investigate the causes of losses. government is also considering selling its operator’s licenses and certificates to interested third parties looking to establish a new Sri Lanka-based carrier.

Just more Sri Lanka "Big Talk" imho.

This has been tried how many times already? Last time Akbar came and basically laughed in their faces.

There is no way to make any of this profitable - makes no difference what they do or who is in charge. The 12 year leases at above market rates with no termination clause have seen to that.

I can sense the desperation from 4500 miles away!

If Mihin Lanka restarts with funding, I'm sure itwill have an adverse effect on Sri Lankan airlines as the market share gets divided.

Do you know the load factor in CMB-MEL flights? I thing it is like 60%-70% as for the above article. I think Sri Lankan should fly 4-5 times a week to MEL.
