Get a couple of Turboprops or A319/A220's for Gods sake and utilize them on routes with lower yield
When UL was purchasing A320Ns there was an initiative to purchase Bombardier C Series but so called Sri Lankan aviation specialists in Sri Lanka said no way it is failed project. Could have purchased 3 x A220s for the price of 1 x A320N. Not any more

This is what happens when the so called "Aviation specialists" have absolutely no common sense, leave alone being well versed in aviation!

I don't see the point as to why UL has acquired the Two A320Neo's as it serves no purpose as it would have been more practical to get 6 x A220's

SriLankan Airlines has decided to suspend flights to Hong Kong from October, the airline said today.

The National airline said that after having re-evaluated its presence in the Far East, the Airline is suspending operations to Hong Kong with effect from October 27, 2018. This decision has been taken following careful assessment of commercial results over a significant period of time.

The airline said it will continue to evaluate future opportunities in the Hong Kong region, as it does with all its markets.

Arrangements are being made to route passengers who have already purchased tickets to and from Hong Kong, on other airlines.

I knew this route would be doomed the moment they switched to a single aisle Airbus 320. When the competition offered a wide body Airbus 330/Boeig 777, this was bound to happen.

And to think for over 35 years UL flew CMB-BKK-HKG succesfully. Taking the Airbus 330 off it was a huge mistake.

So what now? Is the regional Asian strategy still on the cards? If it cannot make a huge city like HKG work, then there is no hope.

Anyway I hope on the positive side that CX upguages CMB.

        • Why do people still not understand what is going on? - it's quite simple.

UL is not a Business - nothing about it resembles a Business. I work for a profitable Airline - it's the complete opposite of UL.

UL is a vehicle for Criminals and Corrupt Politicians for Theft/Fraud/Corruption and Racketeering. They have their "enablers" at all levels of the company - those at the top either turn a blind eye or block/derail any investigation. In return these "enablers" are protected at the highest level.

Why do you think HHR Pradeepa is still there and why no action is taken even if the crimes are published in the National Newspapers?

Even those not involved in any of the above are just there to collect their pay and benefits - impossible to fire anyone.

Why do people think that the same people who have run the country into the ground are somehow going to run an Airline successfully with their cronies at the helm? Delusional thinking!

Debt load is so high it is impossible to pay it off.

Leases are so high it is impossible to operate the aircraft profitably.

There are no profitable routes - the massive losses support this.

          There are no buyers.

There are no "negotiations" going on. There is nothing to negotiate on a contract without a termination clause.

There is no "magic wand" that will turn this around. More delusional thinking.

There is no way out of this mess - the only thing left is a shutdown when the money runs out. Cutting routes looks like a last ditch effort to reduce losses.

Looks like 2 State Banks will be dragged under by this as well. Giving UL unsecured loans is a stupid move imho.
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

                Unbelievable!
When other airlines have an in-house system, why does a loss making airline chose to outsource ?

                  As usual!
Don't they realize that they have yet again made a stupid decision?

I'd be flying in a couple of weeks to MAA and it seems like UL have downgraded form a A333 (currently in operation) to an A321 on my return sector

IndiGo and SpiceJet are definitely going to take advantage of UL's blunder and with Vistara commencing operations to DEL, they'd be guaranteed to loose Pax on that sector as well

It seems like UL is digging their own grave

It's true that some decisions are not really good. But the real reason for most of the flight cancellation is that UL is facing pilot shortage. Unless they find a quick solution for that this will be another big issue for the airline.

Pilot Shortage would add more losses to the airline because the aircraft are being grounded at tarmac most of the time. Any update on the lease return of the current aircraft fleet?

The second being FlyCeylon (a subsidiary of IWS Holdings) who are also set to launch soon
From their website, it looks probable that they'd operate on Bombardier Q300/Q400 aircraft.
                          They've also begun recruiting
FlyCeylon & Serendib Airways still haven't been launched. Any reason?

Have they ordered the aircraft for flight operations?

Just more Corruption - someone's useless Uncle/Cousin/Brother makes a nice profit.

It's all there in the investigation:-

                            -Procedures not followed
                            -Contracts awarded by decree
                            -Complete anarchy!

I'm not aware of a single contract that was above board - all Corrupt deals!

IT department is second only to HR as the most useless department in the company.

That's their own fault - plenty of jobs out there for experienced Pilots. They are paying the price for their poor treatment of their Pilots. The word is out!

No Expats will join - plenty of jobs in Europe. No need to join the mayhem at UL!
