  • President applies brakes on new State sector appointments

*Issues new circular; Says all appointments must be approved by President
    * In the interim, opt for Additional Secretaries or retired officers

Following controversial appointments to two key State-owned enterprises, President Maithripala Sirisena has issued fresh instructions on selection criteria in a bid to eliminate problematic candidates. Issuing a circular to all Ministry Secretaries, President’s Secretary Udaya Seneviratne informed all Ministry Secretaries that all appointments should be first cleared from his Office, President-appointed spokesperson for the Sirisena-Rajapaksa Cabinet MP Mahinda Samarasinghe told media yesterday.

The circular comes in the wake of the reported appointment of Dr. Nalaka Godahewa to head Sri Lanka Insurance and the earlier appointment of Kapila Chandrasena to SriLankan Airlines. Following criticism, the latter was removed soon after the appointment.

When asked if Godahewa is subject to the circular, Samarasinghe said he was unaware of the appointment. However, he insisted that all appointments will be subject to the circular.

Godahewa is currently on bail on a charge of misappropriating State funds.

The circular instructed Ministry Secretaries to appoint senior administrative officers suitable with similar ranks as Additional Secretaries or retired officers on a temporary basis to any vacant position in State-run enterprises.

    • SriLankan Airlines plans to fly to more destinations in India

SriLankan Airlines plans to connect more Indian cities with Colombo as India is an important market for the carrier, a senior official said Friday.

Currently, the national carrier of Sri Lanka operates 122 flights every week from 13 destinations in India.

"India will be an important market for expansion for the airline... we plan to fly to more destinations (in India)," SriLankan Airlines' Manager (North India) Chinthaka Weerasinghe said.

He was speaking at a briefing here to mark the airline's 25 years of operations in India. The carrier commenced its flights to the national capital in June 1993.

The airline is also working with STIC Travels, its General Sales Agent (GSA), and Sri Lanka Tourism to further increase the number of air travellers to the country.

It has a code share agreement with Air India. Code sharing allows an airline to book its passengers on its partner carriers and provide seamless travel to destinations where it has no presence.

The Sri Lankan carrier has services to Chennai and Kochi, among other destinations.

As per its website, SriLankan Airlines has a fleet of 27 Airbus planes, including 13 A330 aircraft.

Reservations are open for both the flights. I'm really surprised Moscow-Colombo route have demand for 10 weekly flights. According to Colombopage, Russian embassy requested for daily regular flights between Russia and Sri Lanka.

                      • Sri Lanka has earned 26.23 billion US dollars through exports of goods and services, including tourism and labour in 2024, up 12.6 percent from 23.29 billion a year earlier, data from the central bank shows.

Looks like this investigation is going nowhere.

Nobody will be held to account.
