SriLankan Airlines (UL, Colombo Int'l) has renegotiated several aircraft leases saving the airline USD150 million over five years as part of efforts to put the carrier on a stronger financial footing, chairman Ashok Pathirage has said without revealing the lessors or the aircraft affected.
Currently aircraft fleet at UL is not fully operational. I wonder why UL shouldn't sublease the aircraft to Fitsair, Fly Lankan Asia and Spark Air. Isn't that better for UL instead of grounding aircraft? May be Fitsair and Startup airlines can negotiate for lease with lower rate. But may be in the current market there are plenty of aircraft available in the much cheaper leases. But I am thinking from UL point of view and saving the national airline.

Agreed100%... However I did hear from a source at UL that most of the A320 narrow body fleet as well as the NEO's are not in fully operational condition (maybe still in storage) I also heard that UL are paying a very high leasing fee for most of the newer aircraft and operating some of them aren't profitable... I always question as to why UL decided to lease out 2 A320neo's which do not serve any purpose and should have opted for either the A220 or Turboprop aircraft to serve lower yielding sectors to India and Maldives and also for domestic flights... I think the other airlines are positioned to make better calls and management decisions rather than having to negotiate with UL which i feel would be a waste of time

Any idea why they had a lengthy discussion with Minister? Does he know anything about aviation?
The temporary travel restriction introduced by the Government on travels originating from the United Kingdom to Sri Lanka on account of the new Covid -19 Variant in the UK has been lifted with immediate effect.

Any chance more UL flights to London? any news about BA to Cmb?
Wizz Abu Dhabi has already ordered more new A321 neos as they are looking forward to expand their service to Indian subsidiaries and Africa apart of the current destinations from AUH base.
As far as I know Rotana was mainly doing charter flights and it wasn’t going very well.
It shows 31,745 LKR to go from CMB to AUH next month. Hopefully Sri Lankan will be commencing operations soon. There is no any updates yet regarding Air Arabia Abu Dhabi.
Will it give good connection to UK if Wizzair announce Colombo? CAA of Sri Lanka said there are plenty of LCC are interested in flying to Colombo. Hope Wizzair is one of them.

It will be an effective operator if they start of flying to Colombo from Abu Dhabi as it will be even better with UK connections. Wizz has been saying “they will expand their operations further more towards Asia”since the beginning of its operations in AUH. I believe that Wizz will be operating to Colombo very near future..I’m looking forward to operate that inaugural flight as the one and only Sri Lankan who works for Wizz.

“We are hopeful that the necessary approval will be considered soon by the Indian authorities to commence the project,” Chanaka told the Daily FT.
This is a really good move! I’m a huge supporter of the LCC concept and yes it would definitely affect pax volume to and form KWI mainly the yield on KU... the same example can been seen in the case of Oman Air as a result of Salam Air beginning operations
Flew WY recently and the MCT-CMB sector had around 30 pax in total... upon clarifying as to why this was as i too was pretty surprised why the load factor was so low, the answer was “because of Salam Air”
I still feel that Mihin Lanka should have been around
Similarly Wizz Air Abu Dhabi (if so they begin operations to AUH) would negatively affect Etihad
Emirates is alright on the DXB sector as Fly Dubai is their subsidiary
KU is going to increase CMB flights from 20 March 2021
Thursdays - B777-300ER
Saturdays - A320neo (new flight from 20 March 2021)
It's going to be competition between SriLankan Airlines, Jazeera and Kuwait Airways on the Colombo-Kuwait. Each of these Airline is having twice weekly on this route.
