madurai and trichy airports are closeby, about one and a half hours journey between them. hence, it's absolute rediculous for mihin nor sri lankan airlines to consider and ply madurai airport. moreover trichy airport is located equidistant within tamil nadu state making it easier for everyone to travel from the surrounding districts apart from chennai or trivandrum airports. thus no wonder both sri lankan and mihin are having high patronage so much so that they in are fact, planning to increase more frequencies to cope with the demand. hence, in conclusion this sounds more on politics than being potential.Comment

Sir, Madurai is the 2nd most visited place in Tamil Nadu next only to Chennai. A very few places in India only have this heritage value or tourism potential. Above all, there are more than 18 Million people waiting for the first international service. There are family woes that the labor people of Middle east and far east countries that wish to spend their time with their families. I bet we could give 95 percent load once if somebody start service from here irrespective of the carrier.Originally posted by Scoot View Post

Sri Lanka Tourism has got off to a good start in 2012 with January arrivals reaching a record 85,874, up by 15.7% over the corresponding month of last year.
For the month of January the largest arrivals from a single country came from neighbouring India which records 14, 615 tourists. This shows a 6% increase from January 2011.

Mihin Lanka flights to Madurai
Mihin Lanka is interested in starting their operations b/w Colombo(CMB) and Madurai(IXM). They will send officials to Madurai International Airport (IXM) this week to inspect the facilities available to start their direct flights b/w IXM and CMB.
Mr.Prasath Kariyavamsam, SL embassy for India informed this message over telephonic call to MP.Mr.Manik Tagore to make arrangements for same.
Mihin Lanka is expected to start 4x weekly flights in CMB-IXM-CMB initially and may shift their base from Trichy to Madurai.
