Probably because UL does not have a small enough aircraft to operate to JAF, we just have to wait and see since hopefully JAF airport will be getting expanded soon with a longer runway and more facilities, which could mean that UL could deploy an A320. I'm not really sure but we just have to see.
I don't think Sri Lanka is developed enough for domestic air travel, don't get me wrong, The only reason that domestic flights don't really work in SL is because of the price and the undeveloped facilities, since flights can go up to 200USD almost and it just makes sense to take the train rather than fly to JAF. However, if prices reduce in the coming years, from 200 to 100 (round trip) then I believe it would be possible.
Nuttall noted the potential for operating UL flights to Jaffna once its airport can accommodate A320 aircraft, asserting that support from AAI will be essential to make this plan possible. Sri Lankan Airlines has launched its ad campaign, Colours of Jaffna, to promote Jaffna as the next major tourism destination.

Mineralnye Vody – Hambantota route twice a week
From November 2, 2024, Red Wings Airlines intends to begin operating flights on the Mineralnye Vody – Hambantota route twice a week: on Tuesdays and Saturdays. “Sri Lanka is an island of eternal summer, enchanting with its nature and history. There is everything for an ideal holiday: sandy beaches, azure waters of the Indian Ocean, tropical forests, mountain landscapes, rich flora and fauna, ancient cities, tea plantations and much more,” said the press service of Mineralnye Vody International Airport.
Moscow-Zhukovsky, Samara - Hambantota charter
This fall, a new line will appear in the schedule of Kurumoch Airport. Residents of the Samara region will be able to fly to South Asia. In the upcoming winter season, direct charter flights to Sri Lanka will be launched from Samara. — Red Wings charters will take tourists to the city of Hambantota (Mattala Airport) from October 29 to May 17. This is a new product for the 2024–2025 winter season, the Association of Tour Operators said. Since the flights are charter flights organized by a tour operator, Samara residents need to estimate 175 thousand rubles for two for 10 nights.Tours are already available for booking.
Tyumen - Hambantota route twice a week
The flight program starts in early November, organized by the tour operator Fun&Sun. The flights will be carried out on an aircraft that can accommodate more than 400 passengers. “The results of last year showed that the direction is interesting and profitable,” added Mr. Maltsev. Since last year, Red Wings and Fun&Sun have also been operating direct flights to Sri Lanka from Yekaterinburg. Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean. In the northwest it borders on the waters of India, from which it is separated by a sandbank called Adam's Bridge.

I see SU is upgrading CMB from 2 weekly A333 to 4 weekly with it's own metal B777-300ER between SVO-CMB in W24. Possibly 402 seater.
Any chance of seeing Azur Air, Air Astana, LOT back and any new airlines coming to SL in coming months? So far we know only about the resumption of SpiceJet, Edelweiss & Jetstar Singapore.
SKYBUCK729 channa Aaqib WizzWaveSien Azamh and rest of the team - VS going to compete with BA on LHR-MLE route from the end of Oct24 with Daily B789s. Any possibility BA extending LHR-MLE flight to CMB? I see UL is increasing LHR from 7 to 9 weekly for the increased demand during winter. Last time BA did operate CMB from LGW but terminated due to commercial reasons, wonder why?. Why BA shouldn't try CMB from LHR ? I really also want to see KL, AF, DE, OS, and more european carriers back in SL. Back in the days German birds were flying a lot in SL. We saw DE and LT were flying almost every day here in CMB covering from almost all German cities. Why that's not happening anymore.

From Italy only possible hope was Neos Air but no plans so far. ITA Airways is launching new routes like DXB, RUH, DSS, ACC, MLE and they are keep expanding. Anyway next year is very important for aviation industry with launch of Riyadh Air and New aircraft arrivals to major airlines.

VS and BA will most likely be sticking to MLE and not fly to CMB unfortunately, seems like it, but hopefully that will change soon.

Sri Lanka makes travel easier for tourists, scraps visa fees and restores online applications
Sri Lanka has restored an online visa application platform to encourage tourism after its top court suspended a controversial multimillion-dollar deal that outsourced visa processing to a foreign consortium. The government of newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said late Thursday that the move was intended to promote the island nation's key tourism sector, as its economy limps out of the 2022 financial crisis.

NPP Govt. abandons plan to privatize SriLankan Airlines
* Says it should remain with state for tourism promotion
* Plans for new management improvement
Colombo, September 30 (Daily Mirror) - The National People’s Power (NPP) government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is to abandon initial plans by the previous rule to sell off or divest the cash strapped SriLankan Airlines, an official said.
The previous government initially planned the sale process of the national career through the State Owned Enterprises Restructuring Unit . After that the former Cabinet said it abandoned the sale process and decided to look at an alternate model to divest the airline.
However, Chairman of the NPP Economic Council Prof. Anil Jayantha said the government believes that the national career should remain with the state given its significance for the development of tourism. He said the airline would not be sold off or divested as a result.
He said a new model for the improvement of its management would be considered instead.
The previous Cabinet agreed to take over debts of US $ 510 debts of the national career in a move to attract a private investor . It originally decided to sell at least 51 percent of the state-owned carrier.

Policy decision on SriLankan Airlines restructure to be taken after elections
Tuesday October 1, 2024 6:31 pm
ECONOMYNEXT – No decision on the restructure of state-run SriLankan Airlines will be taken until after elections bring a new government to office, Minister Vijitha Herath said.
“In this interim period we will not go for any policy related decisions,” Minister Herath told reporters at weekly post-cabinet press briefing.
“In a future government, which we will build soon, we will go for some actions. At the moment, in this short period we will not go for policy decisions.”
Sri Lanka sought a buyer for a stake sale of SriLankan Airlines but nothing was finalized, the current sale process was dropped amid weak interest.
