    SriLankan Airlines Cancels Switzerland and Italy Service from Sep 2012

    As per 04APR12 GDS inventory display, SriLankan Airlines is cancelling service to 3 destinations in Europe. 3 weekly Colombo – Zurich service will be cancelled from 29AUG12, while 3 weekly Colombo – Milan Malpensa – Rome – Colombo will be terminated from 09SEP12.

        It is official now :

        Srilankan planned to cancel its flights to Zurich, from 1st May to 26th June, but will recommence on the 27th of June and will continue until the 31st of August. Similarly, Rome and Milan services will be cancelled during off-peak between 5th May to 26th June and will operate from 27th June until 9th September 2012. “SriLankan will continue to review its operations to Switzerland and Italy and directed by forecasts, travel trends and developments in the Euro zone, to identify commercial viability, so that flights can be recommenced in these markets, at an opportune time” added a statement issued by the Airline.

          Colombo - Frankfurt - Colombo flights which are already being operated as 5 frequencies per week in the Summer 2012 schedule will be increased to 7 flights per week in the Winter 2012.

                Interior upgrades are not being done for 4R-ADA/B/C. but I do not know whether these old birds will be stored/retired with these cuts.

                  • The government pays US $ 7.7 million as monthly lease rental for 21 air craft employed by the SriLankan Airlines, said a document tabled, in Parliament yesterday, by Civil Aviation Minister Piyankara Jayaratne.

                    Mihin Lanka too had obtained two aircraft on lease basis and their monthly rental stands around at US $ 475,000, the report said.

                    SriLankan Airlines had earned a total income of Rs 216,138 million during the years 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

                        Mihin Lanka hopes to fly daily to Dhaka in the near future increasing facilities to the travelers.

                        "We have received encouraging response from Bangladesh market which led us to increase our flights to four in October 30 of 2011 and added the fifth frequency very recently-on March 30 this year," Kapila Chandrasena, Chief Executive Officer of the airline told a press meet at a city hotel on Thursday.

                        He said Mihin Lanka started its Bangladesh operations on December 11, 2010 with three flights paving the way for direct air services after a long interval. Bangladesh is an important destination for Sri Lanka in terms of business potential and also tourism growth.

                          I am not sure what is definition of political interference; and again he also mention that to reduce loses as well...lol...I hope UL CEO's 5 year business plan includes and considered these type of risks as well; but again there is good scapegoat; blame it on the Jet A1

                            As per the above article it covers the entire fleet of UL.

                            So, to put things in perspective:

                            1. UL has not been paying the leases on their aircrafts as above.
                            2. UL does not pay for fuel as CPC foots the bills (on credit basis, but they never get paid).

                            So, where does all the revenues made by UL go?
