SriLankan Airlines has made progress in the first half of this year by reducing group loss to 76 million US dollars, a 10 million dollar improvement over the previous year.

This was achieved despite an overall decline in Group Revenue of 43 million dollars, 70 percent of which was due to a drop in passenger and cargo revenue.

Sri Lanka's national air carrier to begin flights to Jaffna Airport to boost tourism

Sri Lanka's national air carrier, SriLankan Airlines said on Thursday that it would soon begin flights to Jaffna in the north of the island country, to boost tourism in the area.

Group Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines Vipula Gunatilleka quoted in local media reports as saying the airline hopes to begin flights to the newly opened Jaffna International Airport by next year and will look at leasing smaller aircrafts to operate in this route.

"The airline will include Jaffna as a stopover destination when operating flights to some of the Indian destinations, thus establishing good connectivity between Colombo and Jaffna as well," Gunatilleka said.

He added that the opening of an international airport in Jaffna will help boost the economy and tourism in the area and as the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines hopes to assist in these efforts by operating flights.

"Our current fleet do not have the required equipment to operate to Jaffna and we will look at the option of acquiring a suitable aircraft to launch this operation next year," Gunatilleka said.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena last month opened the Jaffna International Airport in a bid to boost tourism and development in the former war-torn province.

The airport was constructed at an approximate cost of 12 million U.S. dollars.

Good move! This would've actioned ages ago. SriLankan flights to Jaffna would allow passengers to book directly fly from abroad to Jaffna with a stop over in Colombo Airport.

Any idea what type of Aircraft UL would acquire ? I think they might opt for ATR 72’s although I do think that the Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 is a better suited turboprop in terms of efficiency and comfort

Seamless connectivity between Canada and Sri Lanka

SriLankan Airlines is taking a firm step towards further increasing travel connectivity between Sri Lanka and Canada. SriLankan Airlines commences codeshared non-stop services between Toronto and New Delhi with long standing partner Air India, providing seamless connections to Colombo, from 7th*November 2019 onwards.

Travelers will now have the opportunity to book their entire journey in one go, which they were earlier unable to do. The non-stop flight from Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport to New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is supported by rapid connectivity to Colombo with connection times of just 4 hours for Colombo-Delhi-Toronto and 6 hours for Toronto-Delhi-Colombo. Flights operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays both to and from Toronto. The Delhi-Toronto flight AI187 will have the UL code UL3640; while the Toronto-Delhi flight AI188 will have the code UL3641.

Contract to supply SriLankan Airlines aviation fuel awarded to 12 airport locations

Cabinet proposal presented by Finance Minister*SLA operates in 37 destinations in 19 countries

Cabinet this week gave approval to award the contract for the supply of aviation fuel for SriLankan Airlines at 12 airport locations worldwide, in order to maintain the services of the airline.

The Cabinet proposal was presented by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

SriLankan Airlines presently operates its services to 37 destinations in 19 countries.*

It would be better if Sri Lanka promote the southern beaches and wildlife to attract charter flights to use HRI.

Australia discusses ideas to increase commercial flights at Mattala
Australian High Commissioner David Holly today said he discussed ideas with the management of the Mattala Airport to increase commercial flights to boost tourism.

High Commissioner Holly tweeted and said he was impressed by the facilities at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport.

“Discussed ideas to increase commercial flights to boost tourism and grow Sri Lanka’s economy with Chief Airport Manager U. Kalansuriya,” he said.


Sounds good but to me the headline is incorrect.. in order to increase you must have something in place.. we don't any flights to MRI as of now.. anyway if at all anything gonna land in this empty air port that will benefit in the countries economy..
